For those of you who may not be familiar with porn, it is a depiction of erotic behaviour intended to cause sexual excitement.  Growing up in the ’80s & ’90s this was not easily accessible.  I watched my first porno in my adult years after I had already established a healthy view of my sexuality.  However, nowadays porn is easily accessible for very young children and it is having an effect on our young men.

Puberty is a very challenging stage for young men.  Their hormones levels rise and they have a heightened curiosity of sex.  How can you tell when boys are going through puberty?

  • It takes 5 to 7 years starts between the ages of 11-15
  • The most noticeable physical changes are facial hair, having a frequent or spontaneous erection.
  • wet dreams ejaculating semen when sleeping.
  • Experimenting with masturbating. Touching yourself for pleasure.
  • Growth spirit
  • Penis growth along with pubic hair
  • Some may have mood swings.
  • Some boys tend to seek more privacy

Porn is an addictive activity on the internet, especially during this stage.  It can cause ADHD, social anxiety, depression, performance anxiety and OCD.    When someone is addicted to porn, other things do not satisfy the addiction.  Porn is exciting they love the feeling they are getting.  Modern porn has taken over young men at a rate that I don’t think society was ready for.

Men who are addicted to porn look at women differently.  They tend to see us as objects and our only purpose is to be used for their purposes. More men are watching porn now than ever before because of the internet.  The Porn industry makes over 80 billion dollars a year.  It’s tied to the derogatory treatment of women which includes human trafficking and prostitution.

The problem with porn is not physical, it’s psychological.  Porn ostracises you from your loved ones you tend to feel disconnected.  Let’s not call porn a problem for both men and women, it’s overwhelmingly men that are addicted.

There is help. If you are fighting an addiction to porn you can try the following:

  • Admit to yourself you have a problem.
  • Talk to others who may have the same problem, make sure they are trustworthy.
  • Start to starve your addiction by keeping busy and add protective software that will block unwanted things on your phone.
  • Find alternative things to do, join clubs etc…
  • Reduce stress. Meditate and connect with the universe on a spiritual level.
  • Dig deep – figure out what causes your addiction.
  • Be patient, it takes a while to develop an addiction and it will take some time to heal.
